Pre-flight

This is one of the most important aspects of combating jet lag. Before departing, make sure you have all your affairs, business and personal, in order. Ensure you are not stressed-out with excitement or worry, and not tired or hungover from a function the night before. Get plenty of exercise in the days prior to departure and try to avoid sickness such as the flu, colds and so on. If you have a cold, flying will probably make it worse – ideally you should delay the trip. Get a good night’s sleep just prior to departure.

East or west?

There is much debate about whether it is better to fly eastward or westward. It may be largely a matter of personal preference, but there is some evidence that flying westwards causes less jet lag than flying eastwards.

Night or day flight?

Again it is largely a matter of personal preference based on experience. Most travelers think daytime flights cause less jet lag. We note that more daytime long haul flights are being added by major airlines.

Drinking fluids

The dry air in aircraft causes dehydration. Drinking plenty of non-alcoholic fluids counters this. Water is better than coffee, tea and fruit juices. Alcohol not only is useless in combating dehydration, but has a markedly greater intoxicating effect when drunk in the rarefied atmosphere of an airliner than it does at ground level.

Sleeping aids

Blindfolds, ear plugs, neckrests and blow-up pillows are all useful in helping you get quality sleep while flying. Kick your shoes off to ease pressure on the feet (some airlines provide soft sock-like slippers, and many experienced travellers carry their own).

Exercise

Get as much exercise as you can. Walking up and down the aisle, standing for spells, and doing small twisting and stretching exercises in your seat all help to reduce discomfort, especially swelling of legs and feet. Get off the plane if possible at stopovers, and do some exercises or take a walk. This also helps to reduce the possibility of blood clots and associated trauma.

Showers

During extended stopovers on a longhaul flight, showers are sometimes available. A shower not only freshens you up but gets the muscles and circulation going again and makes you feel much better for the rest of the flight. Melatonin

This is a controversial and complex treatment for jet lag involving the manipulation of a hormone in the body, starting in the days preceding travel. Sleeping pills (don’t!)

Some people use sleeping tablets to try to alleviate jet lag. This is a dangerous approach as sleeping pills induce a comatose state with little or no natural body movement, and it is well known that prolonged immobility during flight can lead to fatal blood clots (deep vein thrombosis). This was reported as far back as 1988 in the Lancet, which said it was estimated “that over three years at Heathrow Airport, 18% of the 61 sudden deaths in long distance passengers were caused by clots in the lungs.” Picture the leg veins as bags of blood. When this blood doesn’t circulate there is a risk that it will clot. In addition, many so-called sleeping pills are variants on anti-histamines and they tend to dehydrate significantly, adding to the already significant problem of in-flight dehydration.

1 Obey the rules of the road and carry your drivers license with you.

2 Plan the route to your holiday destination and give yourself enough time to reach the destination

3 Make sure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before departure. All lights and indicators, windscreen wipers, brakes, steering, exhaust system and tyres should be carefully examined for faults.

4 Do not overload.

5 Try to avoid driving after dark if possible.

6 Have a good rest before you embark on your journey

7 Take safety breaks every 2 hours or 200km

8 Do not drink and drive

9 Try to recognize potentially dangerous drivers on and pedestrians alongside the road and keep well clear of them

10 Be visible – drive with your lights on

11 Headlights should be dipped well before an approaching vehicle is within range of the main beam.

“From a development perspective, income from tourism may reduce poverty by creating jobs, which can in turn help with biodiversity conservation. Many conservation organizations are seeing the value of setting up small businesses that are based on or benefit the environment,” says Tim Badman, Director of IUCN’s World Heritage Programme. “However, if tourism is badly planned and not managed responsibly, it can lead to biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and negative impacts to local communities.”

From a conservation point of view, tourism can raise funds for protecting natural areas, enhance awareness amongst locals and tourists of biodiversity and conservation issues, as well as discourage local people from carrying out activities that are harmful to nature. The report sets out a range of factors that support and hinder sustainable tourism development in World Heritage sites.
 
The report outlines several World Heritage sites which have suffered from the impacts of tourism, one of them being the Belize Barrier Reef System where uncontrolled lease and development of land for tourism within the site has led to it being included on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2009. Some of the environmental impacts of this include mangrove cutting and coral dredging.
 

As many as 2 million government staff, including immigration officials, nurses and civil servants, are expected to take part in today’s one-day strike, the Trades Union Congress  said in a statement. London ’s Heathrow airport, Europe ’s busiest hub, and Gatwick, the capital’s second airport, warned passengers they will face delays and Education Secretary Michael Gove said more than 90  percent of schools will be shut.

Unions are striking to protest plans to make government employees retire later and contribute more to their pensions. Ministers say the move, part of Cameron’s program of spending cuts to narrow thebudget deficit , is fair because workers who contribute to public-sector pensions get benefits no longer available in the private sector.

“They’re asking millions of public servants to pay higher contributions that won’t go into their pensions, but will go to paying off the deficit,” TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber  will say in a speech today in Birmingham, central England , according to extracts released by his office. “They’ve scrapped the bankers’ bonus tax and replaced it with a teachers’, nurses’ and lollipop ladies’ tax.”

Immigration was operating normally at Heathrow early this morning, though the situation might change after an influx of flights at 7 a.m., a spokeswoman said by telephone. There were no early delays at Gatwick, spokeswoman Sarah Baranowski said by phone.

‘Significant Delays’

Even so, arriving international passengers at Gatwick should expect “significant delays”, the airport said in an e- mailed statement. There are 243 scheduled inbound flights today carrying around 29,000 passengers, 8,000 from outside the European Union where delays are most likely, the airport said.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander  announced an improved offer to the unions on Nov. 2, after they had started holding ballots for strike action . The concessions included protecting existing pension rights for people 10 years from retirement, higher limits for government contributions and improved benefit-accrual rates.

“The deal we offer on public-sector pensions is fair to both taxpayers and public servants,” Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne  told lawmakers in the House of Commons in London yesterday as he announced that growth next year will be slower than previously forecast and the government will need to increase borrowing.

‘Jobs at Risk’

“I ask the unions why they are damaging our economy at a time like this and putting jobs at risk,” Osborne said. “Call off the strikes, come back to the table, complete the negotiations and let’s agree generous pensions that are affordable to the taxpayer.”

Heathrow, which last week warned passengers they could face delays of as long as 12 hours waiting to pass through immigration, now expects waits of two to three hours, operator BAA Airports Ltd. said in an e-mailed statement. Police officers have been drafted in to assist with passport checks, Home Office minister Oliver Eden said in the House of Lords on Nov. 28.

‘Adequate Resources’

“Some police will be involved, but they will have the appropriate training to do the job,” Eden, who is also known as Lord Henley, told lawmakers. “We started training additional staff for contingency arrangements in April and adequate resources are now available.”

British Airways, the largest operator at Heathrow, which offered passengers the option to rebook their flights, said it is planning to operate its full schedule.

Other airlines have scrapped flights because of the walkout. Etihad Airways  said it canceled three planes to Heathrow from Abu Dhabi , while Singapore Airlines Ltd. (SIA) dropped two flights to London, saying there was a “significant risk” passengers would be unable to disembark from planes.

Eurostar Group Ltd., which runs trains through the Channel Tunnel, said passengers will experience delays at check-in in Paris and Brussels “in particular in the afternoon.” Travelers are advised to arrive one hour before departure rather than the usual 30 minutes, it said on its website .

Pay Cap

Labor unions were angered by Osborne’s announcements yesterday of a 1 percent cap on public-sector pay increases once the current two-year freeze is over, an increase in the pension age to 67 and an easing of health-and-safety legislation. The chancellor also said he will make it easier for private companies to take over public-sector services.

The Office of Budget Responsibility increased its estimate yesterday of the number of public-sector workers who will lose their jobs by 2017 to 710,000, or 13 percent of employees in local and central government. The office previously predicted that 400,000 posts would be cut by 2016.

“This will have a devastating impact on the economy and communities across the U.K.,” Mark Serwotka , general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services union, said of the job cuts in an e-mailed statement. “It’s the people who are paid the least who are having to pay the price.”
