Use No-Jet-Lag

This is a safe and effective remedy for countering jet lag, in the form of easy-to-take tablets. Its effectiveness has been proved in a scientific trial of round-the-world passengers and confirmed by longhaul flight attendants in a test conducted in cooperation with their union. Being a homeopathic preparation using extremely low dosages, No-Jet-Lag has no side effects and is compatible with other medications. It has no connection with the controversial hormone melatonin. No-Jet-Lag is available at luggage stores, health stores, pharmacies and international airports, click here for store locator, or click here to order No-Jet-Lag online from Magellan’s.

Pre-flight

This is one of the most important aspects of combating jet lag. Before departing, make sure you have all your affairs, business and personal, in order. Ensure you are not stressed-out with excitement or worry, and not tired or hungover from a function the night before. Get plenty of exercise in the days prior to departure and try to avoid sickness such as the flu, colds and so on. If you have a cold, flying will probably make it worse – ideally you should delay the trip. Get a good night’s sleep just prior to departure.

East or west?

There is much debate about whether it is better to fly eastward or westward. It may be largely a matter of personal preference, but there is some evidence that flying westwards causes less jet lag than flying eastwards.

Night or day flight?

Again it is largely a matter of personal preference based on experience. Most travelers think daytime flights cause less jet lag. We note that more daytime long haul flights are being added by major airlines.

Drinking fluids

The dry air in aircraft causes dehydration. Drinking plenty of non-alcoholic fluids counters this. Water is better than coffee, tea and fruit juices. Alcohol not only is useless in combating dehydration, but has a markedly greater intoxicating effect when drunk in the rarefied atmosphere of an airliner than it does at ground level.

Sleeping aids

Blindfolds, ear plugs, neckrests and blow-up pillows are all useful in helping you get quality sleep while flying. Kick your shoes off to ease pressure on the feet (some airlines provide soft sock-like slippers, and many experienced travellers carry their own).

Exercise

Get as much exercise as you can. Walking up and down the aisle, standing for spells, and doing small twisting and stretching exercises in your seat all help to reduce discomfort, especially swelling of legs and feet. Get off the plane if possible at stopovers, and do some exercises or take a walk. This also helps to reduce the possibility of blood clots and associated trauma.

Showers

During extended stopovers on a longhaul flight, showers are sometimes available. A shower not only freshens you up but gets the muscles and circulation going again and makes you feel much better for the rest of the flight. Trans-Pacific pilots have told us taking a shower in Hawaii helps them recover more quickly from the general effects of jet lag after the flight.

Melatonin

This is a controversial and complex treatment for jet lag involving the manipulation of a hormone in the body, starting in the days preceding travel. Research shows that if you miscalculate the right time to take it, melatonin will actually make jet lag worse! And for research that casts doubt on whether melatonin does counter jet lag click here.

Anti jet lag diet

Another complicated method is the anti jet lag diet. Like melatonin, this is for people with lots of time on their hands who can devote several days before and after a trip to preparing. Although it has some passionate devotees it is complicated and there is little evidence that it works. If you’re interested, click herefor jet lag diet information

Sleeping pills (don’t!)

Some people use sleeping tablets to try to alleviate jet lag. This is a dangerous approach as sleeping pills induce a comatose state with little or no natural body movement, and it is well known that prolonged immobility during flight can lead to fatal blood clots (deep vein thrombosis). This was reported as far back as 1988 in the Lancet, which said it was estimated “that over three years at Heathrow Airport, 18% of the 61 sudden deaths in long distance passengers were caused by clots in the lungs.” Picture the leg veins as bags of blood. When this blood doesn’t circulate there is a risk that it will clot. In addition, many so-called sleeping pills are variants on anti-histamines and they tend to dehydrate significantly, adding to the already significant problem of in-flight dehydration.

Many South Africans will embark on journeys to visit friends and families during this long weekend.May we on this Heritage Day weekend also remember to protect the lives of all on our roads and drive with caution and consideration!!

1 Obey the rules of the road and carry your drivers license with you.

2 Plan the route to your holiday destination and give yourself enough time to reach the destination

3 Make sure that your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition before departure. All lights and indicators, windscreen wipers, brakes, steering, exhaust system and tyres should be carefully examined for faults.

4 Do not overload.

5 Try to avoid driving after dark if possible.

6 Have a good rest before you embark on your journey

7 Take safety breaks every 2 hours or 200km

8 Do not drink and drive

9 Try to recognize potentially dangerous drivers on and pedestrians alongside the road and keep well clear of them

10 Be visible – drive with your lights on

11 Headlights should be dipped well before an approaching vehicle is within range of the main beam.

12 Always wear your seat belt and see that everyone in the car is wearing theirs.

13 Drive defensively

14 Stay within the speed limit at all times

15 Only overtake when it is absolutely safe to do so

16 Maintain at least a 2 second following distance – this distance should be increased at night, in foggy or rainy conditions and when the road is wet.

17 Expect others not to be as obedient to the law as yourself

18 Be courteous towards fellow road users – keep your temper and resist the temptation to retaliate

Share these suggestions with your family and friends – And may you and your family have a good rest over this long weekend!! Protect not only the safety of your car – but also the lives of your loved ones and all other road users!

Are you counting the days towards that last working day so you can leave for a well deserved break? Perhaps you’ve got a visit to some of the most beautiful natural sites in the world on your to do list. Here are a few tips, ranging from choosing eco-hotels and being mindful of your carbon footprint to avoiding buying souvenirs made from endangered species and making sure you know that what you’re eating isn’t under threat. The tips come courtesy of the IUCN.

Top ten tips for eco-tourists:

1. Visit destinations which have conservation value, such as protected areas, World Heritage sites or areas where nature and culture is a key attraction. Include in your trip visits and activities related to conservation projects. Visit www.protectedplanet.net. Or take this a step further and plan a “doing” holiday. Many organisations plan expeditions where you can spend time working on a local conservation project. The Khamai Reptile Park near Hoedspruit makes use of volunteers during certain times of the year.

2. Travel light: limit the packaging you bring with you. This will become waste in your holiday destination.

3. Before you travel, learn as much as possible about your destination, about the natural assets, the local people and their culture and any environmental concerns. For example, during the dry season, open fires may cause runaway fires in the Lowveld areas of Southern Africa.

4. Use reputable local tour operators, preferably those who contribute to conservation themselves. Aim to follow any local codes for example regarding behavior or dress if visiting cultural or sacred natural sites.

5. Pick nature-friendly accommodation: ask hotels if they are truly eco, for example do they have an environmental policy? Have they implemented energy and water saving measures? Do they contribute to local conservation efforts and support local communities?

6. If you can, try to get to your destination by train or coach – you’ll see more of the country you’re travelling in as well as reducing your carbon emissions. Consider also offsetting your travel using a Gold Standard supplier.

7. When you’re on holiday, choose wisely what you put on your plate. Choose locally sourced produce that’s in season and be aware that certain endangered species may be on the menu without your knowledge – ask local conservation organisations for a list of what to look out for.

8. Many wild plants and animals are in great danger … you can contribute to protecting them by avoiding buying souvenirs made from endangered species (jewellery made from red coral and turtle carapace, shatoosh and many others). Be careful if you’re bringing plants or seeds back from your travels – check that they couldn’t become invasive species.

9. Wildlife watching can be an incredible experience… but don’t disturb wildlife, for your own safety and theirs. Don’t feed animals in rest camps in the Kruger National Park and other nature reserves, especially the ‘cute’ animals such as monkeys, baboons and warthogs.

10. Maintain a relationship with your new friends in the destination, become a member of local conservation organisations.

	*****************

“From a development perspective, income from tourism may reduce poverty by creating jobs, which can in turn help with biodiversity conservation. Many conservation organizations are seeing the value of setting up small businesses that are based on or benefit the environment,” says Tim Badman, Director of IUCN’s World Heritage Programme. “However, if tourism is badly planned and not managed responsibly, it can lead to biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation and negative impacts to local communities.”

A full IUCN report on sustainable tourism in natural World Heritage, which shows that tourism, if managed properly, can contribute to both conservation and development goals in or near natural World Heritage Sites can be downloaded at www. iucn.org.

From a conservation point of view, tourism can raise funds for protecting natural areas, enhance awareness amongst locals and tourists of biodiversity and conservation issues, as well as discourage local people from carrying out activities that are harmful to nature. The report sets out a range of factors that support and hinder sustainable tourism development in World Heritage sites.

The report outlines several World Heritage sites which have suffered from the impacts of tourism, one of them being the Belize Barrier Reef System where uncontrolled lease and development of land for tourism within the site has led to it being included on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2009. Some of the environmental impacts of this include mangrove cutting and coral dredging.

The recent publication of alarmist and sensational “facts” by an online travel retailer that suggests consumers are being ripped off by travel agents has prompted South African Travel Centre (SATC) to set the record straight

The recent publication of alarmist and sensational “facts” by an online travel retailer that suggests consumers are being ripped off by travel agents has prompted South African Travel Centre (SATC) to set the record straight and assure the public that they are among the best-protected consumers worldwide.

This is largely thanks to the Consumer Protection Act.

According to SATC CEO Bulelwa Koyana, consumers have become more vigilant with respect to understanding their rights. “There is definitely increased evidence of consumers protecting themselves from entering into potentially harmful transactions with commercial entities operating in the country,” she says.

Koyana says it is important to understand why consumers continue to seek the services of travel professionals (travel agents). “Travel professionals are exposed to every aspect of the industry and they are well-positioned to provide the most appropriate solution to each client’s unique situation.

“Their experience and expertise is invaluable with regards to destination-specific conditions such as visa or health vaccination requirements, advice regarding flight connecting times, not to mention personal support in the event that travel disruptions occur (this brings to mind the frustrations faced by stranded travelers during the recent volcanic eruptions),” she says.

She says consumers should always deal with an ASATA member travel agent to be assured their best interests are looked after. – Saturday Star

THOUSANDS of passengers are facing a second day of disruption as fog continues to force the cancellation of flights in and out of London. Heathrow Airport and London City Airport in the Docklands were affected throughout Sunday.
http://www.uniglobegatewaytravel.info/

Heathrow said 132 flights had been cancelled due to heavy fog while London City Airport suspended up to 44 flights and delayed or diverted others because of "low visibility".

The foggy conditions are expected to lift at about 10h00 GMT, the BBC weather centre says. Some airlines were re-booking passengers on other flights while others were arranging for accommodation. Heathrow Airport is open but air traffic controllers have slowed the rate at which aircraft can land. A Gatwick spokesman said the airport had low visibility and had had a couple of delays but on the whole it was business as usual.

The Met Office has also issued a severe weather warning for areas of "dense fog" which were likely to become "more extensive" during the evening and night and could last until Monday morning. Driving conditions could be "difficult" and motorists have been advised to take extra care. Fog has also affected large parts of Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium.
